![]() ![]() Simply put, when I hit play, I was expecting a direct continuation of Kenoma. Thus, subtly contained within that claim is the implication that, while Kenoma is ace, I nonetheless have some trouble with that very degree of erraticism, no matter which band is exhibiting it. Spontaneous, dissonant, demonic, and unhinged, it harnesses that particular quality of unpredictableness of musical progression which is spearheaded primarily by DEATHSPELL OMEGA, and DEVENEROR on that album manages to (as I say perhaps too frequently and gleefully) to “do DSO better than DSO does DSO”, which really means that it manages to harness what DSO was doing before they went (further) off the rails post- Si Monvmentvm. And even then, it wasn’t just the album drop that caught me off guard… the subsequent surprises came after I pressed play! posted an announcement for Malleus Philosophorum in the Order ov the Black Arts Facebook community that I realized how far they had come. I knew in the back of my mind that United States black metal adepts DEVENEROR were working on a follow-up to 2019’s startlingly skillful and desultory debut Kenoma (2019). Few releases that have come along this year have taken me entirely by surprise. ![]()
